Volunteer

Volunteers are the life blood of Scotswood Natural Community Garden.

The garden is managed by our Trustees, who are all volunteers. On a day to day basis the garden volunteers are vital in keeping the garden looking beautiful and productive. Our main volunteer days are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Working with our Garden Officers, Sean and Leanne, the volunteer team carry out a wide range of jobs including seed sowing, planting, taking cuttings, scything, weeding, tree pruning, grass cutting, path sweeping... you name it... if it needs doing, our volunteers will do it. Volunteers also help harvest the fresh garden produce and turn it into jams, jellies, chutneys and delicious lunches. On a Wednesday we all sit down and eat a shared lunch together, usually harvested fresh that morning from the garden.

The garden provides a warm, friendly space to learn more about growing and gardening, and also meet new friends. We work hard to ensure that everyone feels included and welcome, and that all our volunteers are able to learn and develop at the pace and in the areas that suits them.

We support our volunteers with training where possible, and we run free, accredited courses in horticulture and adult social care. Where needed we also help volunteers to find employment and we regularly provide references for our volunteers. Volunteers have also been involved in various arts projects, including one of our new sculptures on the sculpture trail and many of the mosaics that decorate our bee-themed entrance. We also welcome volunteers who are interested in working on other aspects of the project. This includes our youth work and other education programmes.

As we work with children, young people and vulnerable adults in the garden all volunteers are required to undergo an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check (formerly Criminal Records Bureau). We pay for this to be done. Having past offences on your record does not normally mean that you cannot volunteer with us but we need to be aware of them.

If you would like to get involved with the garden as a volunteer please contact us.
